DARPA, The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, has said that it will create a self-aware computer that will learn, be able to respond to unknowns, and "grow."
Also, efforts to make a "universal translator" are getting closer. A phraselator has been in use since late 2001 and early 2002, and it can translate thousands of phrases in english to over 30 other langauges.
